Bacon Pumpkin Dog Treats

Zu loves bacon as a special treat so I decided to use left over bacon from breakfast to whip up new dog treats. Bacon is strong in any recipe so not much is needed in the treats. Plus, if your pup isn’t used to “people” food, introducing any new treat flavor can cause a slight tummy upset. This recipe is a small batch and can be doubled if your pup loves them and has no issues.

I wash the cookies with an egg before baking, or you can leave them plain.

Use ½ – 1 slice of cooked bacon depending on shrinkage during frying. The bacon in this recipe is just meant as a flavor, not a main ingredient.

Bacon treats are a special flavor to be given to your pup occasionally. The pumpkin in the treat aids in digestion so don’t leave it out. I only use oat flour for Zu’s treats because it’s easy for him to digest. You may also use whole wheat flour.

FLAVOR SUBSTITUTIONS FOR BACON:

  • Replace bacon with ¼ cup of grated apple, add more oat flour if needed when mixing.
  • Replace bacon with ¼ cup of peanut butter, add more oat flour if needed when mixing.

That’s the look of “seconds please”. Definitely Zu approved!

Bacon Pumpkin Dog Treats

Yummy treats with just a hint of bacon for your best bud!

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Knife
  • Medium to large skillet
  • Large bowl
  • Roling Pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 1 slice bacon finely chopped
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup old fashioned oats
  • cups oat flour

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, set aside.
  • Finely chop already cooked bacon, or heat a large skillet and fry bacon until crisp. Drain, cool and pat bacon with paper towels to remove some of the grease.
  • In a large bowl, combine pumpkin puree, 1 egg, oats and oat flour. ( I use my hands)
  • Add chopped bacon, mix until combined.
  • Lightly flour work surface and roll dough to ¼-inch thickness.
  • Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, please on to baking sheet.
  • Mix up last egg and wash over each cookie with a pastry brush.
  • Bake in oven for 25-30 minutes until edges are golden brown.
  • Cool on a wire rack completely before feeding to dog.

Notes

This recipe made 23 cookies with the pig cookie cutter. There will be more, or less, depending on the cookie cutter you choose. Adjust baking time according to your oven.
